After reading chapter 5, I think Steve Turner is trying to get his readers to understand that just because people think that God says nothing about art in the Bible, does not mean there is nothing in there about art. Turner talks about the Psalms a lot - which were mostly written by David. I think one of the greatest examples of art in the Bible is the book of Psalms. The poetic language that is used seems to bring people in and invites them to listen and read. While some think God never directly mentions "art" in the Bible, it is mentioned first in Exodus 31.
I also think that Turner is trying to get us to realize that we can use the Bible as our inspiration for artwork. It does not have to be anything too deep, but the Bible can be used as your tool and your inspiration. The Bible is the living Word, as Turner states, and therefore the ideas and lessons are still relevant today.
I also think that Steve Turner is trying to get his readers to realize that they can be an inspiration. Turner talks about how we are called to be the salt and light of the earth (just like Jesus talks about). We can't make people change, and we can't make people pursue Christ. But we can make movements and start bible studies. We can always do something. If we create artwork that inspires people, we can change their lives. It might be in really small ways, but little progress is still progress. Turner says that we can fight off evil, even it we do not completely eradicate it. Fighting evil is still making a move towards good, and away from evil. Our call is to bring others into good, and do as much as we can to get rid of evil. Turner focuses on this idea a lot in chapter 5, and I think it is because he wants us to realize that our art can be used for good.
One quote that I really enjoyed from chapter 5 was, "A lot of art comes out of pain and so, not surprisingly, a lot of art deals with the problem of suffering." I think it is important to express yourself in the art that you create. If you are not expressing yourself, is it really yours? I have talked about this in pervious blogposts, and I am still a firm believer that your artwork has to reflect who you are. If you create something that you did not want to create, there really is not a point. I feel like art and creativity are the best ways to express yourself, so you have to take advantage of that and use it to express yourself. I feel like one of the best ways to express yourself in through pain. Make something beautiful out of your struggle. If you are going through something hard, take some time out of your day and just relax. Draw something beautiful to help yourself get through it. Art is the best therapy.
