Names and Labels:
"To love is to call by name and be so open the wide gates of creativity. But we forget names turn into labels." L'Engle writes this to show that we take pride in our name. We like when people know our names, and we like when people call us by our preferred name. In our world today, when people know our times, sometimes that don't actually know US. They might know who we are from the outside, but they have no idea who we are on the inside. And I think social media is part of that problem in our world. We see each other through screens and filters that aren't even real, and I think this defeats the purpose of actually knowing someone's name.
"To name is love. To be Named is to be loved." We name the things that we love. We want to be named, because that means that we are loved. When a woman is pregnant, after finding out the gender, the first question that everyone asks is: "Do they have a name?" This is because that is what the baby will go by his/her entire life. Without a name, there is no identity. We find identity in our names. Without our names, we are nothing. We are our names.
"We don't want to feel less when we have finished a book; we want to feel that new possibilities of being have been opened to us." Oh my goodness I relate to this SO MUCH. I do not have much time to read for fun, but when I do.. I never want to finish my books. I can remember reading the last few pages of the Divergent series. I seriously was crying when I was finishing the book. Not necessarily because of the ending (although I was disappointed) but mostly because I was finished reading... I was not going to experience the thrill that the book brought me anymore. I completed the book, and now I knew the ending. I could not undo that. I would always know the ending.
"A child is not afraid of new ideas, does not have to worry about the status quo or rocking the boat..." I love the simplicity of a child's mind. They do not care about what others think about them, what they look like, etc. They only care about their next meal, and their mommy. Children are care-free, and this is what makes them so beautiful and curious.
I think the main point of this chapter is to emphasize how much our society uses labels and names. We place labels on so many things, and this is corrupting our society. However, we have also been labeled since the day we were born. Our society loves labels. We place labels on people, places, things, everything. Everything has a name, and everyone is called by a name. And oddly enough, our society would not work without names and labels. This is how we communicate as Americans, and this is how our world functions.
