Chapter 9: Do we want the children to see it?
"Art is."
I love this quote because it means that there are no qualifications for art. Art does not have to BE anything. Art is whatever you make it out to be. If art for you is making music, then that is your idea of art. If being a tattoo artist is your idea of art, then so be it. You can't discriminate when it comes to art, because there is no right or wrong way to do it - no right or wrong way to "create."
"How do we survive the unreliability of life in this world?"
This world is not our home. This world is not reliable. We cannot rely on the world to provide us much. We never know what to predict when it comes to our world. We predict the weather, we predict the outcome of a sporting event, we predict how many people will be at the concert, but we can't exactly rely on those predictions and make our lives revolve around them. I think the way to survive the unreliability is to make yourself reliable. Make sure that you do what you say you are going to do. Make the people around you trust you. Stick to your word, and honestly that is all you can do. You can't make the world reliable, and you can't make other people reliable. The only thing you can control is YOU.
Chapter 10: The Journey Homeward
"The only way we can brush against the hem of the Lord or hope to be part of the creative process, is to have the courage, the faith, to abandon control."
I love this quote because I think it reflects Christianity so well. We have to have courage, faith, and we have to abandon control in order to find peace in God. There's no way for us to get around any of these. We have to have courage in God, and courage in ourselves. We can't get rid of faith because faith is the foundation of our religion. If we do not have faith, we lose our religion. And we have to realize that God is in control. If God plans for something to happen, it is going to happen whether or not you want it to. And there is nothing we can do about that.
"God can take our emptiness and fill it up with what he wants and drain away the business with which we inevitably get involved in the dailiness of human living."
I feel like there is so much good in this one quote!! To start, L'Engle writes that God can fill us up when we feel empty. And she is so right!! When we need to re-charge because we are so exhausted, the best place to look is into God's eyes. He knows we get tired, and he wants to be there to fill us back up! Also, if we take time in silence to reflect on our lives and our priorities, God drains away the business by making us breathe enough to realize that we are blessed. Human life is busy, and humans are so persistent in doing something all the time. But if we just take the time to stop and look around and what's going on, we might just find that this life is wonderful!
